The day-long Telangana Bandh call given by TRS in protest against Polavaram ordinance issued by the BJP Government at the Centre was total and peaceful. The TRS rank and file took to streets and staged a sit-in at all the ten district headquarters, towns and villages. The Bandh affected normal life in the entire Telangana region.
Chief Minister in waiting K Chndrashekhar Rao gave a call for the Telangana Bandh against the ordinance which paved way for allocation of seven mandals comprising about 230 villages to AP state. KCR also called on Governor ESL Narasimhan to impress upon the centre to withdraw the ordinance approved by the President. The TRS is planning to move the Supreme Court, and its MPs called on the President and the Union Home Minister demanding a roll back of the ordinance. Due to the impact of the Bandh, RTC buses in all the 10 Telangana districts were confined to the depots. It led to inconvenience for commuters at Imlibun and Jubilee bus stands and other bus stations across the state. Bus services from Hyderabad were cancelled to almost all the destinations in both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Almost all business establishments, shops, petrol bunks and offices remained shut down while the leaders of the TRS took serious exception to the Centre for the ordinance.
Demanding roll back of the ordinance, TRS leader Etela Rajender fumed at the Centre for taking a decision in a hurried manner. The Government at the Centre is conspiring with TD Chief N Chandrababu Naidu in this regard, he alleged. Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu who belongs to Seemandhra is making favors to the TDP’s ill intentions, Rajender criticized. The TRS will not hesitate to take up another movement to protect the interests of Polvaram tribals, he said.
In Warangal, former minister and TRS MLA Konda Surekha staged a protest at the RTC depot along with party activists. She accused Chandrababu Naidu of conspiring against the Telangana even before it becomes a new state on June 2. The BJP is colluding with the TDP and disturbing the conducive atmosphere in the region, she said. The President Pranab Mukherjee has approved the ordinance recommended by the first cabinet meeting of the BJP Government at the Centre against the interests of Telangana, she alleged.
In Khammam district TRS, CPI, CPM and New Democracy leaders along with activists staged a protest against the ordinance. During their dharna on roads and at bus depots, the leaders sought the Centre to roll back the ordinance. ‘Lest we will intensify the movement’, they warned.
In Mahabubnagar, TRS leaders prevented the buses from coming out of the depots. Same was the scene at other districts Nalgonda, Adilabad, Nizamabad, Karimnagar, Hyderabad, Ranga reddy. In twin cities, shops and business establishments, petrol bunks were closed till evening.
The Board of Intermediate Education has postponed the advanced supplementary examinations of 11th and 12th standards scheduled for today. (NSS)
