PM writes to Jayalalithaa on Mullaperiyar issue

New DeLhi, December 01: With tensions escalating between the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, the Prime Minister on Thursday wrote a letter to the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Jayalalithaa on the Mullaperiyar dam issue.

As per reports, the PM has pointed to Jayalalithaa that the matter is sub-judice and that a meeting will soon be arranged between both the parties to allay their concerns.

Manmohan Singh had indicated on Tuesday also that a meeting of Chief Ministers of Tamil Nadu and Kerala would be convened soon to discuss the contentious issue at length.

Meeting a delegation of Congress MPs from Tamil Nadu, Singh had assured them that he would talk to Union Water Resources Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal with regard to the issue over which the two states have been at loggerheads for a long time.

The PM had on Wednesday night held consultations on the Mullaperiyar Dam issue which has seen Kerala and Tamil Nadu at loggerheads.

Singh held meeting with some senior ministers including Water Resources Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal on the issue.

The Centre has already appealed to Tamil Nadu and Kerala to amicably settle the issue of Mullaperiyar Dam between them and expressed its willingness to play a role of “facilitator.
