PM will clear doubts on Indo-Pak statement: Congress

New Delhi, July 28: The Congress on Monday expressed confidence that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will clear all doubts on the controversial Indo-Pak joint statement made in Egypt while it appeared to be giving mixed signals on its strategy on the issue.

“The Congress is confident that when the Prime Minister speaks in Parliament on July 29, he will set at rest all the questions, all apprehensions and speculation relating to the Indo-Pak joint statement at Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt,” AICC General Secretary Janardan Dwivedi said in a brief statement.

The statement came in the midst of reports of differences between the party and the government on the joint statement delinking terrorism from the composite dialogue process and the reference to Balochistan, issues on which the Opposition has pilloried the government.

However, at the daily AICC briefing, party spokesman Abhishek Singhvi refused to go beyond Mr. Dwivedi’s statement.

“We have already spoken on the issue. There is nothing further to add. I am not saying anything. The PM will reply to it,” he said.

To questions whether the party supported the line taken by the PM, Mr. Singhvi said, “I am supporting the line which my colleagues (spokespersons) earlier mentioned and which I am mentioning”.
