Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has finally decided to visit Iran to take part in the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit in August.
India was among the founders of the Non-Aligned Movement in the 1950s along with some other newly independent countries like Egypt. Dr Singh would be the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Tehran after Mr Atal Bihari Vajpayee who went to the country in 2001. During the visit, Dr Singh will also take stock of the bilateral relations in a meeting with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The visit may defuse some of the tension in the relations between the two countries that were hit by the recent attack on the Israeli diplomat in New Delhi in which Iranian hand was alleged, and cut in the import of Iranian oil, allegedly under US pressure to isolate Iran.
