PM upset over Parliament’s disruptions could not discuss Triple Talaq issue

New Delhi: Upset over disruptions in Parliament which prevented several MPs from discussing important issues such as Triple Talaq, PM Modi while addressing the Rajya Sabha bid farewell to MPs whose tenure will be ending over the next few weeks.

“It is not now, but in the next 10-20 years that we [Parliamentarians] will realize that we were not able to contribute to the historic legislation,” Mr. Modi said.

Vice President Venkaiah Naidu urged the MPs to conduct themselves in a dignified manner and not spoil “the quality of polity” and make a fresh beginning.

Mr. Modi said the smooth functioning of Parliament stands on both the parties opposition as well as the Government, adding it is not necessary that whatever happens in Lok Sabha should also happen in Rajya Sabha.

Mr. Modi recognized contributions of all the members in Rajya Sabha, while making special mention of Deputy Chairman P.J. Kurien who conducted the assembly smoothly despite all the odds in Rajya Sabha.

He also mentioned former Attorney-General K. Parasaran, cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and former Indian hockey captain and BJD member Dilip Tirkey for their contributions in the House.

While Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu mentioned former Deputy Chairman Mr. Kurien, outgoing member K. Rahman Khan and other senior members who will be retiring over next few weeks.

Mr. Naidu while addressing the House expressed his concerns over low women representation in Rajya Sabha with only 11.7 percent when Rajya Sabha had already passed the Women Reservation Bill in 2010.

He appealed the MPs to conduct themselves in a much-dignified manner in the assembly in the near future which could help the House discuss public issues in a constructive manner, Hindu reports.
