PM Singh, Bhattarai hold talks in Maldives

Maldives, November 11: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday held talks with his Nepalese counterpart Baburam Bhattarai here and is understood to have assured him about the early signing of a bilateral double taxation avoidance pact.

The two leaders met on the margins of the 17th SAARC Summit in this picturesque Maldivian island, nearly three weeks after their talks in Delhi during Bhattarai’s maiden official visit to India.

During today’s meeting, Bhattarai is believed to have apprised Singh about the progress made so far in Nepal’s peace process, Constitution-drafting and the recent agreement inked among three major Nepalese parties over power-sharing.

The Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement, which was expected to be inked during Bhattarai’s visit to India last month, is also understood to have figured in the talks between the two leaders and Singh is believed to have assured Bhattarai that Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee would visit Nepal soon to ink the pact.

Singh is also said to have accepted the invitation from Bhattarai to visit Nepal and expressed happiness over developments in Nepal’s peace and Constitution-drafting processes.
