Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday released commemorative stamp in the honour of late ghazal singer Jagjit Singh, on his 73rd birth anniversary. The Prime Minister said Jagjit Singh would always remain alive in the hearts of his listeners through his soulful music for the generations to come. “Artists like Jagjit Singhji are born once in centuries. He is no longer with us today, but his music will keep touching our souls and keep entertaining our hearts. I honour Jagjit Singhji once again and congratulate the stamp department for releasing a stamp in his memory,” he said. Meanwhile, Communication and Information Technology Minister Kapil Sibal, Prime Minister”s wife Gursharan Kaur and Jagjit Singh”s wife Chitra Singh were also present at the occasion. Dr. Singh said that Jagjit Singh was a unique artist and an excelled singer in all genres of music, but he would be remembered the most for his soothing gazals. “Jagjit Singhji was a unique artist. He had a deep knowledge as well as interest in the field of music. He was a successful singer, musician and songwriter and not just this, be it classical music, devotional music, folk music, or ghazal, he had a grip of all kinds of music,” he added. Born on February 8, 1941, Jagjit Singh revolutionized ”Ghazal” style and was often been called the ”Ghazal King” of classical and light Hindustani music. Jagjit Singh passed away on October 10, 2011 at the age of 70. (ANI)
