New Delhi: The row over ‘anti-India’ slogans being raised at an event at the Jawaharlal Nehru University against the hanging of 2001 Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru is escalating by the minute as in a fresh development, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of using Delhi Police as a weapon to ‘terrorise’ people.
“Modi ji wants to terrorize everyone by using police,” Kejriwal tweeted.
Meanwhile, Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi hit back at Kejriwal saying that the Delhi Police committed to the law and did not indulge in bearing malice.
“No innocent shall suffer. DP is firmly committed to the RULE OF LAW & does not entertain any malice towards anyone,” Bassi tweeted.
Bassi’s response came after Kejriwal had taken a shot at the Delhi Police accusing them of lying in bed with the Centre and targeting innocent students.
“No one supports anti-national forces. But targeting innocent students using that as an excuse will prove v costly to Modi govt,” Kejriwal tweeted yesterday.
Kejriwal and Bassi have been at loggerheads for a while with the Chief Minister claiming that the city was not safe in the commissioner’s hands and the latter saying that he was ‘competent enough’ to ensure the safety of the citizens.
Meanwhile, seven JNU students have been put under preventive detention by the Delhi Police for protesting and making ‘anti-nation’ slogans.
Earlier, after JNU Students’ Union president Kanhaiya Kumar was sent to a three-day police custody on charges of sedition, Delhi Police requested university vice chancellor Jagadesh Kumar to produce five more students allegedly involved in anti-national activities.
The Delhi Police had also registered a case of sedition against the JNU students, who had agitated against Guru’s hanging following complaints by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Maheish Girri and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP) members.
