Taking a jibe at Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday told the electorate in Maharashtra that only a poor person can truly understand the curse of poverty.
“I have lived in poverty; I know what a great curse poverty truly is. I know that when sickness comes to a poor man’s house, he doesn’t even have money for medicines. This is something that cannot be understood by someone who was born in a Prime Minister’s house,” said Prime Minister Modi while addressing a rally here.
“I wasn’t born in the Prime Minister’s or Chief Minister’s house. I was born in an ordinary family just like you, and today you have given me this position,” he added.
Asserting that the country’s farmers have the capability of take India back to the golden ages, Prime Minister Modi said the Maharashtra Government even failed to fulfil the little needs of the members of farming community.
“Our farmers have power to extract gold out of our mother land and make our nation the ‘sone ki chidiya’ (golden bird) once again. A farmer’s wants are minimal – has ever a farmer asked for a bungalow or a car from the government? They only ask for water,” he said to a reverberating applause by the captivated audience.
Accusing the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) of having the same ideology and motives, Prime Minister Modi said their coalition government did not care for the plight of the farmers.
“Thousands of farmers have died, and not a single tear dropped out of the eyes of the people sitting in the state government. The Congress and the NCP are not different; they share the same ‘Gotra’, the same ideology, same actions and same motives,” Prime Minister Modi said. The Congress and NCP are not nationalist, they are corrupt,” he added.
