PM Modi must be sterner with`Gau rakshaks’: Akbaruddin Owaisi

Hyderabad: Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) legislator Akbaruddin Owaisi late on Friday tore into right wing Hindu groups saying `gaurakshaks’ or cow protection activists were one of the biggest threats to the country.

Akbaruddin Owaisi was addressing a public meeting at Chowk.

“Gaurakshaks are the biggest threats to the country. They are born from the womb of the Sangh Parivar,” Owaisi said.

The legislator also said that it was these cow vigilantes who had killed Mohammed Akhlaque in Dadri, Uttar Pradesh. Those from the same ilk had beaten up Dalits too, he added.

“Hindutva forces are a real problem as they want to spread politics of hate to divide Indians,” Owaisi said.

The MIM leader accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of being “weak” while referring to his recent statements on cow protection activists and Dalits. “The PM should have said that those who kill Dalits will have to face the bullets of the Indian police. If I were in his place, I would have said that,” he said.

Touching upon the unrest in Kashmir, Owaisi sought to compare it with the Israel-Palestine conflict and said that even the Jewish state does not use pellet guns against Palestinians.

“So far 65 people have died in Kashmir, 7,000 are injured and 250 have lost their eyesight. Security force personnel have died too,” he said, attributing the loss to life and limb to Modi government’s failed domestic and foreign policies.

Recognising the growing sectarian divisions within the community , Owaisi urged Muslims to set aside their differences and work within a democratic framework. He lauded the efforts of a Barelwi scholar for reaching out to the Deobandis. He also said that Sunnis and Shiites and other sects will have to work together and called for a unity of Muslims.
