PM Modi congratulates Trudeau for victory in Canadian parliamentary elections

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Justin Trudeau for the victory in Canadian parliamentary elections.

“Congratulations Justin Trudeau for victory in Canadian parliamentary elections,” he said in a tweet.

Prime Minister Modi said India attaches high priority to close ties with Canada.

“We share a strong bond of democracy and inclusiveness enriched by a vibrant Indian diaspora,” Prime Minister Modi said.

“I have fond memories of my visit to Canada in April 2015 and my meeting with you,” he added.

Canada voted in its first new leader in 10 years, as a general election handed Trudeau’s Liberal Party an absolute majority and a stunning blow to incumbent Prime Minister Stephen Harper, CNN reported.

As the last few results trickled in early Tuesday morning, Trudeau told supporters in Ottawa this was what politics could do.

Accepting the defeat without hesitation, Harper on his part said that the Canadians had elected a liberal leader.

India- Canada bilateral relations have seen a transformation in recent years underpinned by shared values of democracy, pluralism, expanding economic engagement, regular high-level interactions and long-standing people-to-people ties. (ANI)
