PM Modi claims 100% electrification, Twitter reacts

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra on Sunday announced that all villages in India have now been connected with electricity.  In a series of tweets, PM Modi said that April 28 will be remembered as a historic day in the development of India.

“28th April 2018 will be remembered as a historic day in the development journey of India. Yesterday, we fulfilled a commitment due to which the lives of several Indians will be transformed forever! I am delighted that every single village of India now has access to electricity. Yesterday, we fulfilled a commitment due to which the lives of several Indians will be transformed forever!” Modi said in a series of tweets.

According to the data sourced from government websites, when the BJP-led NDA government came to power in May 2014, approximately 94% of the villages in India were already electrified and as many as 18,452 villages were without electricity.

Here how Twitterati respond on 100% electrification claim.

“There was already 94% electrification of villages when Modi came to power. UPA took village electrification from 79% in 2004 to 94% in 2014. NDA2 finished last 6% at the same rate as the UPA, approx 1.5% per year,” economist Rupa Subramanya stated in a tweet. “So Modi government gets credit for closing the last 4% not 6%. Basically most villages in the country were already on the grid by the time Modi came to power but headlines and BJP friendly journos make it appear that most villages were not electrified before 2014,” she added.

Sumanth Raman, political analyst and commentator also tweeted the following: “Out of 5.97 lakh villages in India 18k remained to be electrified in 2014. This Govt. has electrified 17181 of them.1236 were declared uninhabited.Out of these 18 k villages,8% (1321 villages) hv 100% households with electricity. Electrification is not equal to having electricity (sic).”

Activist and YouTuber Dhruv Rathee took to micro-blogging site and wrote, “You hire a cleaning service to clean your house. They clean one small corner, 10% of the house and tell you, your whole house is clean. This is what our government is doing by telling us all villages are electrified.”
