PM may lay stone for TIFR campus in city

Hyderabad, October 07: Prime minister Manmohan Singh is likely to inaugurate a meeting of the Third World Academy of Sciences’ (TWAS) and also lay the foundation stone for the Hyderabad campus of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) on October 19. However, an official confirmation is awaited.

More than 350 scientists from 35 countries are expected to attend the general meeting of TWAS to held at LV Prasad Eye Institute from October 19 to 22. The four-day event is being sponsored by the Union ministry of science and technology and hosted jointly by the Indian National Science Academy (INSA) and the TWAS Regional Office for Central and South Asia (TWAS-ROCASA). TWAS is an autonomous international organisation working to promote scientific capacity and excellence for sustainable development in the south.

The Prime Minister is also expected to lay the foundation stone for the Hyderabad chapter of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) coming up on a 209 acre of land on the outskirts of Hyderabad. The TIFR is planning to set up various research and academic facilities at the Hyderabad campus with an investment of about Rs.2,500 crore over a decade. The TIFR has already entered into a memorandum of understanding with the University of Hyderabad to facilitate collaborative research.
