PM holds security meet; reviews threat from Pakistan, China

New Delhi, August 01: With security situation continuing to be volatile and several intelligence alerts coming in of possible terror strikes, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday chaired a meeting of the National Security Council to review the country’s preparedness.

At the meeting held at PM’s residence 7, Race Course Road here, talks mainly focussed on the terror threat emanating from Pakistan-based militant groups and security concerns regarding China.

The government has of late shown concerns over reported Chinese incursions along the border in Arunachal Pradesh.

The Air Force Chief had recently even described China as a bigger threat to India than Pakistan because New Delhi knows little about Beijing’s combat capabilities.

The issues of Islamabad building new bunkers and watch towers along the Indo-Pak border and Line of Control, and maritime security, especially in the wake of Mumbai terror attacks, too came up for discussion, sources said.

The meeting was attended by Defence Minister AK Antony, National Security Adviser MK Narayanan, new Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao, and the three chiefs of the Armed Forces.
