Hyderabad, February 06: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will address nearly 800 delegates from various Commonwealth countries at the 17th Commonwealth law conference to be held at Hyderabad International Convention Centre (HICC) on February 6. The conference of legal fraternity is being held in India after four decades.
The five-day conference will deliberate on issues like the Constitutional and human rights law, corporation and commercial law, judicial independence and protection of human rights lawyers, and contemporary legal topics in 60 sessions to be addressed by eminent lawyers, judges, academicians and other legal personalities.
“The objective of the conference is to share experiences of legal fraternity in different Commonwealth countries including the existing system, their problems and protection of lawyers and individuals with emphasis on human rights,” Soli Sorabjee, chairman of the local organising committee of Commonwealth Lawyers Association (CLA) said at a media conference today.
Chief Justice of India SH Kapadia will deliver the thematic address of the conference on ‘Emerging economies and the rule of law – challenges and opportunities’.
Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Chaudhury, the UK-based leading barrister Lord Lester of Herne Hill, Supreme Court of India judge justice B Sudershan Reddy, the doyen of the English and the South African Bars Sir Sidney Kentridge QC and the Commonwealth secretary-general Kamalesh Sharma, are among the keynote speakers. About 10 chief justices from various Commonwealth jurisdictions are expected to participate.
CLA president Mohamed J Hussain told reporters that the conference will deliberate and provide inputs that will be useful in dealing with various issues encountered in the Commonwealth countries. A Commonwealth moot competition also will be organised to be participated by 12 teams from various commonwealth countries including a team from the National University for Juridical Sciences (NUJS) on behalf of India.
