Lahore, February 11: Barrister Javed Iqbal Jaffrey on Thursday filed a petition before the Lahore High Court challenging the possible grant of diplomatic immunity to double murder accused US citizen Raymond Davis.
The petitioner alleged that the federal government was intent upon giving immunity to the accused under the Vienna Convention, which, he said, was totally illegal. He claimed that the government could not decide the issue of diplomatic immunity, especially when the Vienna Convention did not apply to criminal cases.
Jaffrey said to give undue benefit of the said convention to Davis will be treason against the constitution and the country’s solidarity. He said the matter was before a court of law and the government should leave it to the court to give a decision on the case. The petitioner requested that the Foreign Ministry should be restrained from giving diplomatic immunity to the accused.
