Plants sprouting out of Moazzamjahi market building

Moazzamjahi market is counted among the oldest markets of India but today the stone-made architectural masterpiece is in pitiable condition. The market was constructed during the reign of the last Nizam, Mir Osman Ali Khan in 1935, and was named after his second son Moazzam Jah Bahadur. Attention is not paid towards repair and renovation of the building. Thanks to the negligence of state Archeological Department, plants have sprouted out of the roof. The stately building is used as a godown. Spread over 10 thousand sqyd the historic building is today home to mud utensils. The seeping water completes the picture of decay and negligence.

Originally meant to be a fruit market, the Moazzamjahi turned out to be a place where one could find just about anything – fruits, vegetables, flowers, groceries, earthen pots, paan, ice-cream, dry fruits, hookahs and ittar. There were arms and ammunitions shops also. The Moazzam Jahi Market is not just a fruit market but is an identity of the city of Nawabs. According to historians when Huzoor Nizam Mir Osman Ali Khan Bahadur constructed any bazaar in the city he kept in mind that the bazaars should be at a distance away from the inhabited area.

The Moazzamjahi market bears the same architectural style as that of the High Court, Osmania General Hospital and City College. Some time back Heritage GHMC proposed the conservation and restoration plan of the M.J. market with the cost of Rs. 3 crore. But the plan is yet to be implemented.
