A pinch of murder

Mumbai, July 04: Every sensational murder in recent history has been fodder for creatively-challenged Bollywood. Not far away from the glare of the national media focused on the Susairaj circus, UK teen Scarlet Keeling’s tragic death in Goa and the controversial trial waits to resurface as a masala flick.

Predictably, neither the Goan authorities -struggling to keep the beaches free of pollution and perverts- nor Keeling’s grieving family, are happy about it.

Titled Anjunaa Beach, the film produced by Sikandar Khan, was shot surreptitiously in different parts of Goa, as the makers knew they wouldn’t get permission to shoot the film even if they applied.

The film reportedly shows Keeling as a vivacious girl riding elephants, hanging out at shacks and occasionally doing drugs. Keeling’s family lawyer has threatened legal action against the producers if the film, which is in Hindi, English, Tamil and Telugu, distorts any of the facts of the case.

Her mother Fiona MacKeown said she wished she could see the film before it is released on July 29.

“My daughter has been murdered,” she said. “It’s not about whether I would be happy or not that the movie has been made but I would be interested in seeing it before it is released.” Earlier this year the lawyer leading the prosecution against Keeling’s alleged attackers resigned.
