Mumbai, May 30: The Powai police arrested a 27-year-old pilot on Saturday for allegedly raping a 22-year-old airhostess. Both were in a relationship and had been living together for the last two years.
According to the police, the accused, Varun Agrawal, an Andheri East resident, works with Jet Airways as pilot. The victim had lodged a written complaint against him on May 10. Following this the police investigated the matter and registered a case against Agrawal.
“We have arrested Agrawal from the domestic airport and sent him for medical examination. The victim has also been sent for a medical test and further investigations are on,” said assistant police inspector Asha Korke of Powai police station.
The victim told the police that Agrawal approached her on February 2008 seeking friendship. She said that the fact that they both belong to Uttarakhand and belong to the same profession brought them together.
“A month later, Agrawal approached me for a physical relationship and promised to marry me. He told me that we belong to the same caste and this marriage would be acceptable to both families. He even called my mother and told her that he wanted to marry me,” the victim said.
A few months after the relationship began Agrawal took a transfer to Delhi and started avoiding her calls. The victim too sought a transfer to Delhi. She claimed that Agrawal met her only when he wanted physical intimacy and would otherwise ignore her calls.
This led to frequent fights between the two.
“After a few months the duo took a transfer back from Delhi to Mumbai.Agrawal reiterated his promise to marry her and the couple rented a house in Marol, Andheri. The couple then started living together,” said Korke. “The girl also claimed that they had got married in a temple at Marol and that the accused had given her a ring and sindoor. She has also furnished photographs of them together.”
It appears that Agrawal’s family disapproved of the match and he called off the relationship. In April this year, Aggarwal also reportedly asked the victim to leave the flat. When she pressed for a reason, he told her that his father was against the match.
On May 10, 2010, the victim submitted a written application to the police alleging that Agrawal had raped her and also cheated her.
The police called in the duo, took their statements and investigated the facts of the case.
“The victim claims that several of their mutual friends were aware of the affair,” said the officer.
