Phone sex ran into crores

New Delhi, May 17: Investigations by the Crime Branch into the phone sex racket have revealed that the annual turnover of the “ fake friendship club”, which operated from their offices at Jena Towers in west Delhi’s Janakpuri, ran into crores.

The branch had arrested 25 persons including 20 girls involved in the scam and seized around 52 registers with their clients’ name and phones numbers on Friday.

A case under Sections 419, 420, 468, 471, 120 B and 34 has been registered against those arrested on charges of impersonation, using fake identities and fraud.

Police sources said the registers have over 20,000 names out of which around 7,000 clients could have paid for the service. The women posed as models and stewardesses and asked their clients to deposit money to talk to them on a regular basis.

“ The 52 seized registers have phone numbers and contact details of the clients. Apart from these, the accused women have told us that there are more registers which exist and have been taken by the main accused Rajesh who is absconding,” Dr Joy Tirkey, additional deputy commissioner of police ( Crime), said.

Police sources said they have found 20 accounts at various banks which were used by the gang for their transaction. The clients were asked to deposit a ` 1,000 registration fee followed by a deposit of around ` 7,000 to ` 10,000 depending on the type of woman they wished to speak to.

The arrested women have confessed that their daily turnover was around ` 1.5 lakh.

The police have written to the head offices of various banks asking for their annual bank statements to find out the exact number of men who were duped.
