Philippine typhoon toll rises to 46

Manila: The death toll in the Philippines due to typhoon Koppu, locally named as Lando, has increased to 46, officials said on Friday.

The estimated damage to agriculture and infrastructure wrought by the typhoon also ballooned to 9.4 billion pesos ($202.18 million), Xinhua quoted the state disaster management agency as saying.

The fatalities came from six regions, including Metro Manila, in the northern part of the country, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said.

The number of those injured also rose to 82. The government continued to extend assistance to nearly 300,000 families or about 1.4 million persons who were affected by the weather disturbance.

Koppu made landfall in Luzon island in the early hours of Sunday at super typhoon strength, ripping the roofs off buildings and uprooting trees in the coastal province of Aurora.
