‘Pharmacogenomics required to counter drug-resistant TB’

New Delhi, April 06: With the rise of drug-resistant tuberculosis becoming a concern, the Health Ministry today said better techniques of treatment and judicious use of pharmacogenomics are the need of the hour to counter the mutated strains of the deadly disease.

Studies have suggested that even well-qualified doctors are sometimes unaware of the different effects the same treatment can have on different patients and they have to be made aware of the need for improving the therapeutic regimen, Health Secretary V M Katoch said.

“In our studies we have seen patients getting resistant (of the disease) in front of us, despite being treated by doctors who are no less than MDs.
