Tornamesa, February 26: At least 19 people have been killed and 37 injured after a passenger bus in Peru drove off the Central Highway, plunging into a deep ravine.
The long-distance passenger bus fell into a ravine in the Andes, about 60 kilometers east of Lima near Tornamesa, on Friday.
The bus had been traveling from the central Andean city of Huancayo to Lima, media reported.
“The bus swerved to avoid crashing with a truck and fell into a 590-feet deep ravine,” highway patrol Commander Gaston Ramirez said, adding that no children were on the bus.
Due to seasonal heavy rain and ill-kept narrow and mountainous roads, Peru has a high rate of highway deaths reported annually.
