Perth to have Indian Consulate

New Delhi, April 06: Government today decided to open an Indian Consulate General office in Perth that will benefit the growing Indian community in Western Australia which numbers around 40,000-45,000.

A meeting of the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh gave its nod for the establishment of the Consulate General of India and creation of six India-based posts and six local posts.

“There is a requirement for formal Indian diplomatic presence in Perth in view of the strategic importance of Western Australia from political, economic and defence view point and its important location with respect to sea lanes in the Indian Ocean,” an official spokesperson said.

The move would also provide easier consular access to the population of Western Australia and Northern Territory, she said.
