Washington: A Barack Obama-era rule allows spouses of H-1B visa holders waiting for green cards to work in the US on H-4 dependent visas. But now the Trump administration has told a federal court to revoke work permits to H-4 visa users, a significant majority of whom are Indian-Americans.
The US will make a decision within three months on revoking work permits to spouses of H-1B visa holders, the Department of Homeland Security told a federal court.
The move is likely to affect a large number of Indian workers, Indians comprise around 70% of all H-1B workers in the US, many in the information technology sector. The Department of Homeland Security had first recommended scrapping work permits for the workers’ spouses in December 2017.
The move will have a major impact on Indian women as they are the major beneficiary of the Obama-era rule.
The department urged the court till then to keep its decision on a lawsuit filed by ‘Save Jobs USA’, representing a group of US workers who claim that their jobs have been hit by such a policy of the government that was declared during the previous Obama administration.
