Pension scheme for construction workers

Hyderabad, April 17: Construct ion workers in the State will get pension on attaining 60 years of age in the case of males and 55 in case of females.

The scheme is to be launched soon by Chief Minister K Rosaiah, said AP Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board chairman S Gopal to the media here today.

Workers registered with the board would draw a pension of Rs 600 to Rs 2,000 per month after superannuation, he revealed.

So far 8 lakh workers had registered themselves with the board and, of these, 50 per cent were given identity cards. Gopal voiced the hope that in the next two years, the number in the State would rise to 30 lakh.

The pension programme was taken up as a pilot project in the State, he said, and added that the Union Government was going to provide Rs 1,000 a year per worker, the State Government another Rs 1,000 per annum and the workers a voluntary Rs 200 so as to feel a sense of personal participation in the process.

These amounts would be managed by the Provident Fund Regulatory Authority, he added.

The board chairman explained that those in the 18 to 50 age-group were eligible to join scheme. A campaign would be taken up encouraging workers to registers themselves with the board. The worker needs to have worked at least 90 days in the State every year and is required to furnish a certificate from the builders or parties he has worked with.

Gopal said the board was taking up several welfare measures for unregistered workers like compensation in the event of injury or solatium to kin in the event of death.
