Peace initiative in Kashmir Valley will end with Eid, says NSA Ajit Doval

New Delhi: The Unilateral ceasefire in the eve of Ramadan may not extend after Eid as initiated by Home minister Rajnath Singh according to the recent reports.

National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval has indicated the peace initiative in Kashmir was only till Eid. Since terror activities in the region have increased during the ceasefire, DC reported.

Senior officials plan to table the data collected before the Home Minister who is scheduled to chair the meeting to hold talks on Amar Nath Yatra.

“We wanted to give respite to the common man in the Valley during Ramzan, so they can observe the holy month peacefully. And during Ramzan, we stuck to our stance. The people there are happy and the purpose is served,” NSA Ajit Doval told NDTV.

The data collected shows a significant rise in terror activities in the valley during Ramadan which statistics show have increased to 66 incidents in the duration of ceasefire against 25 terror incidents reported between April 19 to May 16.

“We had suspended cordon and search operations till Eid. Why should the government announce anything now, so after Eid “ceasefire” would just lapse,” a senior intelligence officer is reported to have said.

The officer also said they will provide a detailed presentation before Rajnath Singh. “Facts are sacrosanct. Assessments can vary, so he can judge by himself,” the intelligence officer added.

A senior bureaucrat, however, said extending of the ceasefire is a “political call” that has to be taken by the government.

The data reveals as many as 62 terror-related incidents initiated by terrorists were reported while only six were initiated by the security forces.

22 incidents of grenade attacks and 23 cases of indiscriminate firing by terrorists were also reported during the ceasefire. While attacks on civilians also increased to a number of seven against the previous figure of six.
