Hyderabad: The Progressive Democratic Students Union (PDSU) would lay siege to the Collectorates on August 24 demanding that the State government to solve the problems of the Self-Management Hostels (SMH) and Department Attached Hostels (DAH).
Speaking to the media here on Sunday, PDSU State president J Srinivas and its secretary K S Pradeep said while the role of students in Telangana movement was undescribable, the students were facing serious injustices after the formation of Telangana State. The KCR government, which made several assurances before the elections, completed its two year tenure but not yet increased the mess charges of the students on par with the increased prices. The government was giving mere Rs 35 per day to Degree and PG students and it was not possible to get three meals with that amount.
Reminding the enhancement of salaries of Ministers and MLAs in a big way, the PDSU leaders alleged that the same TRS government failed to think about the welfare of hostel students. The students were facing a lot of problems as the government was running the hostels in private buildings. There were no medical facilities and the students were falling sick frequently. The PDSU leaders demanded the government to increase mess charges up to Rs 2,500 per month and construct own buildings for the hostels.
They also warned the government that they will stage dharnas in a phased manner in case the government failed to solve the problems of the hostel students. They also demanded that the government provide minimum facilities by giving Rs 500 per month as cosmetic charges. The government has to appoint an ANM in every girls hostel and conduct medical camps in every hostel in every month. The government has to give boxes, bedsheets, clothes, plates, towel and other needy goods to the hostel students.
