PDS kerosene, sugar quota slashed

Hyderabad, February 10: Citing inadequate supplies, the State Government has cut down sugar and kerosene quota for ration card holders.

The decision came as a shock to BPL families, which are already burdened by the escalating prices of sugar which is sold at about Rs 40 per kg and kerosene at about Rs 28 per litre in the open market.

As per the orders, which will come into force from this month, the government has decided to supply eight litres of kerosene per ration card in municipal corporations and unelectrified tribal areas, four litres in municipalities and mandal headquarters, and two litres in rural areas.

Half-a-kilo of sugar will be distributed to all BPL card holders in both urban and rural areas.

The decision was taken following the recommendations of the commissioner of civil supplies for ‘rationalisation’ of distribution of both sugar and kerosene. In his report to the State Government, the commissioner said the State was not receiving required quantities of sugar and kerosene due to inadequate allotment.

“Some white ration card holders eligible for the subsidised sugar and kerosene are not getting the commodities under the Public Distribution System. There is a need for adopting a uniform scale of distribution,’’ he said.
