PCL officials take stock of Ratnagiri situation

Mumbai, April 19: The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL), which is setting up in collaboration with the French nuclear power giant AREVA, took stock of the situation arising out of Monday’s violence at Madbhan, Sakhri Nate and other places in Rajapur taluka of Ratnagiri district.

Senior Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd officials briefed their chairman and managing director SK Jain of the events that took place at ground zero. One of the senior officials later commented, “With today’s events, the issue has taken a new turn. We will have to see how it will develop here onwards”.

In a related development, the Janhit Seva Samiti-Madban (JSS), which is spearheading the anti-Jaitapur Nuclear Power Plant (JNPP) movement, decided to intensify its agitation and asked the Centre and Maharashtra Government to “scrap the project right now”. It also threatened to launch an agitation in New Delhi.

“We would go to New Delhi and carry out a sit-in protest there,” JSS founder Pravin Gavankar said, as he blamed Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh for his “flip-flops” on the Jaitapur issue and Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan’s for his “reluctance” to abandon the project.
