Hyderabad, February 25: Press Council of India (PCI) has appointed a four-member committee to probe the `police attacks’ on media persons in Osmania University on February 14 and 15. The Council at its meeting on Feb 22 took a suo motu cognizance of the reports that the police targeted the media persons, who went to the university to cover the students’ agitation on Telangana.
The committee consisting of K Sreenivas Reddy, SN Sinha, Kalyan Barooah (all PCI members) and chief editor of HMTV K Ramachandra Murthy would conduct a thorough inquiry into the incident on March 7 and 8 in Hyderabad.
The committee may also summon the police officers on duty at the time of attack and examine them. It would also hear the complaints from the media persons and examine the material evidence presented by them.
Indian Journalists Union (IJU) secretary K Amarnath, APUWJ president D Somasundar and general secretary Y Narender Reddy welcomed the PCI’s decision.
