PC promises NSG centre for city

Hyderabad, July 02: The State capital will have a full-fledged National Security Guard (NSG) Regional Centre, next only to the elite force’s headquarters at Manesar in Gurgaon, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram announced here on Wednesday.

‘‘The regional centre is a major project and will take a few years to materialise,’’ he said, adding that the proposed centre would come up at Ibrahimpatnam and would have 5,150 commandos. Though he did not set a time-frame for the centre, he said land for the same had already been identified.

The Union Home Minister was speaking to newsmen after inaugurating the NSG hub at Tirumalgherry in the presence of Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy and Director General of NSG NPS Aulakh.

Elaborating on the recent terror alert along western sea coast, Chidambaram pointed out that intelligence inputs about possible terror attacks did not necessarily mean such attacks were imminent.

Asked if he saw Hyderabad as a terrorist hub, Chidambaram replied that it was wrong to brand a city as such but admitted that Hyderabad had indeed come on the terror radar recently. ‘‘A public alert was also issued. But intelligence inputs do not mean that there will be an imminent attack,’’ he repeated.

Hyderabad was put on high alert a few weeks ago after intelligence inputs had warned that a three-member Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) team could sneak into the city.
