New Delhi, July 01: A patient at Batra Hospital in Southeast Delhi allegedly committed suicide by jumping off the hospital’s second floor in the early hours of Tuesday. The deceased, Ravti Prasad, 40, was reportedly suffering from a kidney ailment and had been admitted in the hospital on June 27.
The family of the deceased, however, suspects foul play on the part of the hospital authorities and claimed that the patient was unable to walk on his own and thus could not have committed suicide.
Prasad’s family said that around 2.30 am on Tuesday, the nurse discovered that Prasad was not on his bed. Prasad’s wife, Suman, was sleeping outside the room. Prasad was later found sprawled outside in an unconscious state.
The police received a call from the hospital around 4.30 am. When they reached the hospital, the patient was dead. While the hospital authorities said it was a case of suicide as the patient saw no permanent cure, his family alleged the hospital authorities were involved.
Prasad was working as a driver in Mathura. “He was on dialysis and had to visit the hospital every four or five days over the last two months,” said Anu Sharma, Prasad’s niece.
Prasad’s family also said he had become too weak to move on his own in the last few months. “He could not even take a step. How could he walk to the window and jump out? Where were the hospital authorities while all this happened?” asked Sharma.
Prasad left no suicide note behind.
