Ahmedabad, July 03: Displaying exemplary determination and courage, the victim of the gangrape at the District Institute of Education & Training (DIET), Patan, has stood sixth in Patan district and has secured 86.40 per cent marks in the state’s PTC examination. The exam results were declared on Thursday (July 2). She is now planning to study for a bachelor’s degree.
People who know her say that the girl, who belongs to a poor scheduled caste family from Jetalvasana village in Mahesana district, has a very bright academic career ahead of her. Bharati Patel, a teacher at DIET, Patan, said the girl is very intelligent. “Despite the trauma she had to endure, she scored 84.84% in the first year,” said Patel. “And her recent performanceis good enough to get her a teacher’s job.”
Manjula Pradeep, executive director of the NGO, Navsarjan, which supported the girl during her struggle for justice, said, “She said she had expected 90% marks but has scored 86.40%. She is, nevertheless, happy with the result.” The girl was gangraped several times by some teachers of DIET, Patan, during her first year at the college. After the incident came to light in February 2008, she resolutely fought a traumatic legal battle and put the rapist teachers behind bars for life.
