Dubai, June 02: A Syrian newscaster, Yaman Shawaf, played the Good Samaritan in rescuing a two-year-old baby in the parking facility of the Mall of the Emirates on Tuesday evening. The Chinese baby was saved from suffering grave consequences after he had been locked in his mother’s BMW car.
The tragedy happened as she returned to her car after finishing shopping and put the baby in the back seat of the vehicle, while trying to put the grocery bags in and all of a sudden, the door was locked. The baby then started crying.
The woman was struck with horror as she waited for police and rescue teams to arrive. But, in the meantime, she called out for help, when Shawaf, who was passing by, noticed her.
The 28-year-old Syrian resident rushed to the car to help. Failing to open the car doors, Shawaf used an iron bar to smash a side glass away from the baby to avoid hurting him.
He tried twice to break the glass, and only succeeded in the third time when he hit the window more forcibly, making sure the baby was safe.
Thirty minutes later, an ambulance reached the scene, and provided medical assistance to Yaman who was shifted to the Rashid hospital, where he had around 13 stitches on both his hands.
“There were many people around, including security staff, but they were afraid to hurt the baby,” Yaman told Khaleej Times.
Speaking to Khaleej Times, the mother said she did not lock her baby in the car to go shopping. “I can never do this, and no mother can do this.”
“I took my baby along during my shopping, and put him in the back seat, but the car was automatically locked off with my baby inside,” she said. “I had sent the car for maintenance to avoid such sudden locking,” she added.
