Passengers beat up hooligans in Okha-Gauhati Express

Vadodara, September 19: Hooligans who tried to swindle money by ‘selling’ sleeper berths in general compartments were beaten up by the passengers in Okha-Gauhati Express and handed them over to police, police said today.

Four hooligans, who had occupied sleeper berths ‘illegally’ in the train last night, demanded money from passengers for allowing the passengers to sit the berths. The angered passengers reportedly caught hold of two of the four-member gang and tied to ceiling fans in the compartment, the railway police said.

Talking to PTI here today, the railway police said, “we learnt about it when the train reached Vadodara railway station and took custody of the two and sent them back to the railway police at Nadiad railway station where the incident took place for registration of case against them.”

Two other members of the gang jumped off the running train after the angry passengers started beating their two associates.

The railway police said the gang members illegally occupied sleeping berths in the compartment after the train started its onward journey from Ahmedabad last night. Then they forced some of the passengers to give them Rs 150 to Rs 300 per berth for allowing them to sit and travel smoothly on the berths to their destinations in Utter Pradesh and Bihar.
