Parliamentary Standing Committee explores possibility of bamboo, rubber industries in Tripura

An eleven member Parliamentary Standing Committee on Commerce (PSCoC) is on a study trip to Tripura to explore the possibilities of wooing investors to set up industries using rubber and bamboo.

The team visited the rubber park and bamboo park at Bodhjung Nagar Industrial Growth Centre near Agartala to see the development in the sectors in the state. The committee also visited a bamboo flooring industry, which investors claim to be the lone industry of its type in the country.

Later the MPs also had a discussion with officials, planters and workers involved in the rubber sector in the state.

PSCoC chairman Chandan Mitra expressed hope that bamboo and rubber wood products will find big and lucrative markets within country and abroad.

“The growth of the bamboo furniture industry, pressing and rubber wood, which are much cheaper than solid wood, are beneficial for the environment. I hope that Tripura is able to organise greater production of bamboo products and rubber wood so that it can be sent to other parts of India,” Mitra said.

“I have no doubt that it would find a very big and lucrative market in India and abroad,” he added.

Mitra also stressed on the importance of the connectivity which is vital for investment to flow in the North-East region.

“The government has announced that the Border Road Organisation (BRO) is going to speed up work on the border roads. Once connectivity and communications improve, investments will flow in and the economic condition of the people will improve,” he said. (ANI)
