New Delhi, August 03: The Parliament is all set for a heated debate on price rise on Wednesday after the government finally agreed to a debate which entails voting. The Parliament has been stalled by the Opposition for two consecutive days.
For two straight days, there was no business in Parliament. Worried that the longstanding list of legislative business might suffer, the government has finally given in. It has agreed to a discussion on price rise under rule 184 which allows voting.
In the past, any debate followed by a voting has been a source of huge concern for the government. While this discussion on price rise may be no threat to the government, it certainly could embarass it further.
The numbers are:
UPA : 273
UPA Supporters from the outside: 47
Combined Opposition : 209
At the moment, the government managers are working overtime to ensure that the balance tilts in their favour. Allies like the Trinamool are already thinking in terms of criticising the government during the debate, but at the vote, they will look for stability at the Centre.
The opposition is already gunning for more. Notices have already been filed seeking separate discussion on the prime minister and home minister’s role in the 2G scam. The CAG report on Commonwealth Games scam is also ready ammunition.
