Parents thrash pregnant girl to death

Nalgonda, January 24: In a macabre incident, the parents of a minor girl who became pregnant before marriage, beat her to death, removed the foetus from the womb and buried her and the foetus separately in a tribal hamlet in Nalgonda district late yesterday night.

The girl’s parents allegedly tore apart the woman’s womb and removed the foetus as it is a belief that burying a woman with the foetus in her would bring evil to the village and prevent rains. The incident that took place in the Guvvalagutta hamlet in Kambalapally gram panchayat in Chandampet mandal, came to light today and the police who went to exhume the bodies to shift it for autopsy were facing stiff resistance from the villagers.

The girl, aged 17, was the daughter of Malotu Hariya and Chinya. Yesterday, the parents took the girl to the government hospital at Devarakonda with severe stomach pain. But the doctors found out that she was pregnant and refused to abort it as she was seven months pregnant.

On the way back home, the couple allegedly thrashed the girl for becoming pregnant before marriage, police said. By the time they reached the village, the girl succumbed to injuries. Villagers allegedly advised Hariya not to report the matter to the police and bury the body. But village elders told him that burying a woman with foetus would bring evil on the village.

“Without a second thought, Hariya tore open his daughter’s womb with an axe and removed the foetus from it,” police said. The villagers later buried the girl and the foetus separately.

The news about the incident reached Devarakonda police today morning. Devarakonda circle inspector Sardar Singh and Chandampet sub-inspector of police Pramod Kumar reached the village by afternoon but were not allowed to exhume the body.

Additional forces were rushed to the spot and police are likely to exhume the body tonight.
