Panchayat takes bold steps to check female foeticide

Worried over deteriorating sex ratio in Haryana, panchayat of a village in the district has decided to socially boycott and penalise those who are found to be indulging in female foeticide. In a bold initiative, the panchayat of Kishan Garh village yesterday decided to not only boycott those found practising female foeticide but also to impose a penalty of Rs 21,000 on them. “We have unanimously passed a resolution about the decision after contemplating over the issue of female foeticide in depth at the panchayat’s meeting as serious and bold efforts are required to combat the menace of female foeticide,” the village sarpanch Dharam Singh told PTI. He maintained that “The panchayat will call for social boycott of those villagers found indulging in female foeticide besides imposing a fine of Rs 21,000 on them. Their social boycott will be announced at the panchayat’s meeting so that no other one could dare to do so,” said the sarpanch. A five-member committee comprising of women was also constituted to keep a check on the practice and to prevent such incidents. The committee with the help of the panchayat would also launch an awareness campaign to educate villagers especially women regarding the negative impact of female foeticide on the next generation. The meeting was attended by people belonging to all castes. PTI
