Ramallah: Palestinian leaders have urged the Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO), country’s second highest decision-making body, to revoke its formal recognition of Israel.
The PLO has recommended revoking recognition of Israel until it recognises the “State of Palestine in its 1967 borders, on the 1967 borders and revokes the decision to annex East Jerusalem and expand and build settlements,” reported Wafa, the Palestinian official news agency.
The Council had decided in its final statement that “the transitional period stipulated in the agreements signed in Oslo, Cairo and Washington, with its obligations no longer stand”.
It was the 28th ordinary session of PLO under the name “Jerusalem the eternal capital of the State of Palestine”, held between January 14 – 15 2018 in Ramallah, in the presence of President Mahmoud Abbas.
Eighty-seven members out of 109 members were present during the session, while the other could not attend as they were arrested or prevented by Israel, Wafa further quotes.
President Abbas, in his speech, reiterated commitment to a two-state solution based on international resolutions and stressed that Palestinians will not accept US attempts of mediation.
“Now we say ‘No’ to Trump, we won’t accept his plan – we say the ‘deal of the century’ is the slap of the century,” Abbas said.
The PLO stated that it would find “other international pathways under the auspices of the United Nations to sponsor solving the Palestinian cause”.
Israel was officially recognised in 1988. The PLO and Israel signed the Oslo Accords in 1993 and 1995. The Oslo deals handed over Israel a full control over the Palestinian economy, civil and security matters in over 60 percent of the West Bank, initiating all controversial matters between the Israel and Palestine, quotes Al Jazeera.
Around 600,000 to 750,000 Israeli citizens currently live in the occupied Palestinian territories. The Israeli government supports their citizens and provide them incentives to move to the Palestinian private land.
