Islamabad, April 05: The government in Pakistan’s Punjab province is trying to deliberately delay a notification issued by President Asif Ali Zardari to remit the remainder of the prison sentence of Indian prisoner Gopal Das, according to a media report today.
On March 27, Zardari remitted the remaining prison term of Das, who has been jailed in Pakistan for 27 years, on humanitarian grounds following an appeal from India’s Supreme Court.
The President made an announcement in this regard three days before the Prime Ministers of the two countries met on the margins of the cricket World Cup semi-final at Mohali.
Presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar said the notification remitting Das’ sentence was issued the same day and immediately sent to the concerned departments.
