Narowal: Pakistan’s Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal on Sunday evening was shot and wounded after addressing a rally in Narowal city of the country’s Punjab province.
Iqbal escaped the possible assassination bid on his life and sustained injuries in his right shoulder and underwent treatment at a district hospital.
“He is receiving initial medical treatment at DHQ Hospital in Narowal,” Iqbal’s son Ahmed told Geo News, adding that his father would be shifted to Lahore for further medical aid.
State Minister for Interior Tallal Chaudry said the suspected shooter has been identified as Abid Hussain and has been arrested.
The suspect, who is a resident of Narowal, is about 20 years old and being interrogated, according to media reports.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has condemned the assassination attempt and called for a probe into the matter.
Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif has also condemned the incident.
Shehbaz Sharif has reportedly sent his official helicopter to Narowal to airlift Iqbal to Lahore.
An investigation is underway in the matter. (ANI)
