Amritsar, May 09: A Pakistani spy was on Monday arrested along with his two accomplices and a large consignment of arms and narcotics seized here.
Acting on a tip off, Kala Masih, a resident of Narowal district of Lahore in Pakistan, was arrested while he was handing over the consignment to Indian nationals Jaspal Singh and Baljit Singh, an ex-serviceman.
AIG, State Special Operation Cell, Manminder Singh said that they seized nine sophisticated automatic pistols and two kilograms of heroin with street value of Rs 10 crore which had been smuggled from Pakistan.
During investigations, it came to light that Masih, a close aide of notorious Pakistani smuggler Abad Ali, had been frequently crossing over into Indian territory from the riverine area of Gurdaspur Sector with consignments of fake Indian Currency, heroin, arms and ammunition.
Masih last arrived in India over a month ago and was since then operating on this side at the behest of Abad Ali.
“His expertise on border terrain was an asset for the smugglers and he was asked to shift his base to Indian side to exploit it to its fullest,” officials said.
Masih was working with Jaspal Singh, a notorious smuggler who had already undergone a 10-year sentence in Tihar, Delhi when he was caught with 70 kgs of heroin in early 1990s.
Jaspal engaged Baljit Singh, a ex-serviceman, to provide Masih suitable accommodation and all other logistics for smuggling activities.
With arrest of Masih, teh authorities are hoping to unearth the complete network of this gang.
The entry and exit points on the border used by Masih are being ascertained.
Detailed interrogation of the accused is in progress, they said. The Pakistani connection to the consignment and the ultimate destination of the same is being ascertained.
A case has been registered under various sections of Arms Act, Indian Passport Act and Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, the AIg said, adding more arrests are likely.
