Pakistani bomber kills 3 policemen

Islamabad, January 31: An explosion in northwestern Pakistan has left three policemen, including a senior officer, dead and injured a dozen people, security officials say.

A bomber attacked the car of police Deputy Superintendent Rashid Khan in Peshawar, the capital city of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province on Monday, said Siiraj Ahmad, the district’s top civil administrator.

“Rashid Khan, his guard and driver have died while 13 to 14 people are injured,” Ahmad said.

According to reports, five of the injured are policemen.

Pakistani health officials say they received four bodies — three police officials.

Pro-Taliban militants have targeted increasing numbers of officials and civilians alike, in recent years, killing and injuring thousands in the region.

No group or individual has yet claimed responsibility for Monday’s attack, but many pin the blame on pro-Taliban militants in the tribal areas along the Afghan border.

Peshawar is close to Pakistan’s troubled tribal regions and the Afghan border.

Earlier this month, one person was killed and 11 others left injured after a bomb exploded near a school in Peshawar.
