Kabul: Javid Faisal, Deputy spokesman for Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah, said that Pakistan will provide a list of Taliban members willing to negotiate with Kabul at the Quadrilateral Coordination Committee (QCC) meeting today in Islamabad aimed at reviving the Afghan peace process.
Faisal said Pakistan has agreed to cut off financial support to Taliban fighters based in Pakistani cities, TOLONews reports.
Adviser to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz while addressing the four-nation meeting of the QCC today said the talks aimed to outline efficient procedures which will provide a basis for smooth functioning of the group.
Aziz proposed four points to help guide the reconciliation process.
First point, he mentioned, was creating conditions to incentivise the Taliban to move away from using violence to pursue political goals and come to the negotiating table.
Secondly, reconciliation process should include sequencing actions and measures appropriately to pave the way for direct talks with the Taliban, Aziz said.
Thirdly, using confidence-building measures to encourage Taliban groups to join the negotiating table, he added.
Lastly, Sharif suggested that a realistic and flexible roadmap which broadly defines steps and phases, but avoids unrealistic targets and deadlines, is important for charting the course of action.
A senior official in Pakistan’s foreign ministry said that Islamabad will be represented by Foreign Secretary Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry during the talks, while Kabul will be represented by Deputy Foreign Minister Hekmat Khalil Karzai. (ANI)
