Pakistan: TLP chief charged with treason, terrorism

Islamabad: Pakistan’s Information minister Fawad Chaudhry on Saturday announced that Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) chief Khadim Hussain Rizvi has been charged with treason and terrorism.

Briefing the media regarding last week’s countrywide crackdown against TLP leaders and workers, Chaudhry also revealed that several leaders including Pir Afzal Qadri, Inayatul Haq Shah and Hafiz Farooqul Hassan have also been charged under treason and anti-terrorism laws, reported Dawn.

On November 23, Rizvi was taken into “protective custody” by police from Lahore as law enforcement agencies launched a massive crackdown against workers of TLP and Tehreek-i-Labbaik Ya Rasool Allah (TLYRA).

He also divulged that as many as 2,899 people were taken into protective custody from across Punjab, 139 from Sindh and 126 from Islamabad.
Rizvi and the other TLP party members were also allegedly involved in staging violent protests wherein they blocked roads and vandalised public and private property following Asiya Bibi’s acquittal.
