Pakistan minority minister assassinated

Islamabad, March 02: Pakistani Minority Affairs Minister Shahbaz Bhatti has been shot dead in Islamabad by unidentified gunmen after receiving several death threats.

The assailants opened fire at the Christian politician’s car in a residential district in the capital, Islamabad, on Wednesday morning.

The gunmen have fled after the incident, a police official told Media.

Medical sources say Bhatti was dead on arrival at Islamabad’s Shifa Hospital.

He was an outspoken opponent of Pakistan’s controversial blasphemy law.

Bhatti’ death comes two months after the assassination of the governor of Punjab Salman Taseer by one of his police bodyguards.

Taseer was also campaigning against the law.
