Pakistan evolving consensus on Saeed’s prosecution: Manmohan

Sharm-el-Sheikh, July 17: Pakistan has assured India it is evolving a consensus on taking action against Hafiz Saeed, one of the masterminds of the Mumbai terror attacks, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said.

Speaking to reporters after two-hour-long talks with his Pakistani counterpart Yousuf Raza Gilani, Manmohan Singh said he had raised the matter of Pakistan taking action against Saeed, founder of the Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jamaat-ud-Daawa.

‘The Pakistan prime minister told me that there is common consensus being evolved that action will have to be taken against him. The Punjab government, which is of the opposition party, is being persuaded,’ he said.

Saeed had been put under house arrest following pressure from India after the Nov 26 attacks. But the Lahore High Court last month ordered his release.

India has expressed disappointment at his release and has asked Pakistan to bring the Mumbai attack perpetrators to book.
