Wellington, December 03: Pakistan were firmly on the mat against New Zealand as they slumped to 161 for the loss of six wickets at the end of the first day’s play in the second Test.
Skipper Daniel Vettori along with Daryl Tuffey, who came in to the side to replace the injured Shane Bond, did most of the damage as the duo picked up 5 wickets between them to break the back of Pakistan’s batting line-up.
While Tuffey chipped in with two crucial wickets for 32 runs, Vettori captured three scalps for 42.
When bad light forced the play to end early at the Basin Reserve stadium, the two not-out batsmen for the visitors were Kamran Akmal on 21 and Mohammad Aamer on 2.
Earlier, New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori struck twice to put the visiting Pakistan team in a spot of bother as they went in to tea at 90/3 after having won the toss and elected to bat first in the second Test.
At tea, the two not out batsmen for the visitors were Umar Akmal on 20 and Misbah-ul-Haq on 8.
In the morning, Pakistan started well with openers Imran Farhat (32) and Salman Butt (29) putting on 60 runs but lost their way as soon as Butt was removed by Iain O’Brien.
It was then the turn of Vettori to get into the act as he quickly removed both Farhat and Yousuf.
New Zealand lead the Test series 1-0 after a narrow victory in the first Test.
